    Prizes:

    • 1st prize: $2,000
    • 2nd prize: $1,000
    • 3rd prize: $650

    Frequently Asked Questions

Design-a-Sock is your chance to tell us what you want on our socks, and maybe win the opportunity to see it produced. It also happens to be one of our favorite times of year! We get to see thousands of amazing designs and interact with all of you in a way we wouldn’t otherwise. That said, we do sometimes need to sleep and eat, so we created this FAQ to answer some of your questions during this busy time. If you don’t find your question here, please leave a comment and we’ll add it!

    Who is eligible to enter?

This contest is international and open to people 18 and older! Parents and legal guardians of children under 18 also may submit designs created by their children. Residents of the following countries are not eligible to enter or win: Afghanistan, Belarus, Burma/Myanmar, Central African Republic, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Montenegro, North Korea, Russia, Syria, the Crimea region of Ukraine, the Donetsk People’s Republic region of Ukraine and the Luhansk People’s Republic region of Ukraine, (collectively, the “Restricted Territories”).In addition, individuals who are subject to any applicable governmental sanction or restriction administered by the United States Office of Foreign Assets Control are not eligible to enter.

Where do I enter my design?

You can complete your entry form and submit your finished design here: contest.sockittome.com. Or, after you complete the online form, you can mail it to: Sock It to Me, 9592 SE Main St., Milwaukie, OR 97222, Attn: International Design-A-Sock-Contest. Check the Official Rules for more information about what must be included with mailed entries.

    When are entries due?

Entries can be submitted 7/6/23 – 7/31/23. Entries received by mail must be postmarked no later than 7/31/23 and we must receive them by no later than 8/7/23.

    How many can I submit?

    5 designs per person.

How many colors are allowed per design?

We prefer 6 colors per design, because if a sock with more than 6 colors makes it through the voting process to win, we’ll need to adjust the design for production. All judges will use this preference during the contest because our socks cannot be created with more than 6 colors. Black and white are counted as colors.

    What are the prizes?

1st Place: Cash prize of $2,000 and your design may be manufactured on real socks, at our discretion.

2nd Place: Cash prize of $1,000 and your design may be manufactured on real socks, at our discretion.

3rd Place: Cash prize of $650 and your design may be manufactured on real socks, at our discretion.

If we produce a winning design, there is no additional compensation to winners.

When will the winners be chosen?

Winners will be announced on or about 8/30/23.

    How does the voting work?

Sock It to Me judges, including our designers and our in-house team of experts, will select the top 30 designs from all eligible entries. We will post these chosen 30 semi-finalists on our site https://contest.sockittome.com for our fans to vote from 8/14/23 – 8/20/23 on their favorite designs. The 10 designs that receive the most votes will be entered into a final round of judging, and Sock It to Me judges will select the final 3 winners from the top 10 finalist designs. Winners will be announced on our site.

The semi-finalist judging and finalist voting will be based on the following criteria:

    1. Simplicity of design
    2. Use of a maximum of six colors
    3. Use of colors that are flat and solids, NO shading, blending or half tones
    4. Use of pattern
    5. Originality
    6. The judging to select the 3 winners will be based on all of the above finalist criteria, plus the additional following criterion:
    7. Use of imagery, themes, patterns, or designs that are different from our current line

Can I offer my fans prints/goods/services in trade for votes?

No. If we become aware of a finalist trading goods or services for votes in this contest, they will be disqualified. Promoting your design and asking for votes are both allowed. Details can be found here: FAQs.

What if my design isn’t chosen as a winner, but you want to produce it?

Any socks produced are created with the artist’s permission first. If we like a design that doesn’t win, we’ll contact you to see if you are interested before we move forward with production.

If I submit an entry, do you own the rights to the design?

No. Contest entries will not be sent back to you, but we don’t own the rights to submitted contest entry designs: you do. However, by submitting a design you do grant us the right to use that design in our marketing activities and on our websites and social media channels. Once winners are chosen, we contact each artist before moving forward with production. We will own the rights to any version of the design we agree to produce on socks (e.g., if we modify or adjust the design as part of the sock design or manufacturing process). There is no additional compensation to winners beyond the prize.

Where will the winning designs be produced?

They will be produced at the same manufacturers we use to create all our socks. They are located in South Korea, where our founder is from and first discovered fun, vibrant knee socks. We have visited the factories multiple times to ensure fair practices, and we have a close relationship with them. You can read (and see) more about one of the trips here: https://blog.sockittome.com/jays-asia-trip/.

Why do you hold this contest?

For fun! Our founder, Carrie, created this contest over a decade ago in the fashion of the restaurant coloring contests we all did when we were kids waiting for our food to arrive. We have an amazing, full-time, professional apparel design team who come up with creative and unique sock designs ALL THE TIME (seriously, they are great). This contest is an opportunity for our fans to participate in the process and an opportunity for us to see, directly from our fans, what they think would be cool on a sock.

Do you have suggestions for designs?

Something that we don’t already have (take a look at our current line to see what is already available). Also avoid complex details or gradients as these are difficult to translate onto a sock. You can design any style you want (crew, knee high, etc.), though that might get changed during production.

Can more than one of my designs be chosen as a finalist?

Yes. You can submit up to 5 designs and the finalists are chosen based on merit, so it’s possible that one artist could end up with 2 designs in the voting period. This isn’t something that has happened frequently in the past, but you never know!

Can I take a tour when I drop off my design?

Unfortunately, we aren’t currently set up to offer tours. Our fun sock office will have to remain a mystery! You can take a look behind the scenes here: https://blog.sockittome.com/category/behind-the-scenes/.

Golden Pinwheel Young Illustrators Competition: 2023 Call for Entry Open

    Deadline: 26 June 2023

The China Shanghai International Children’s Book Fair (CCBF) is glad to announce that a new edition of its Golden Pinwheel Young Illustrators Competition is open to entries from 27 April to 26 June 2023.

The Golden Pinwheel Young Illustrators Competition is an international illustration contest held annually as part of the China Shanghai International Children’s Book Fair (CCBF), with the support of the Shanghai Press and Publication Administration. Since its creation in 2015, the competition has been providing a venue for emerging illustrators to showcase their talent. It aims to build bridges between them and children’s publishers, both locally and globally. In so doing it has given fresh life to China’s children’s book industry. In the last edition, after a three-month submission campaign, the competition received an amazing number of artworks—12,130 pictures created by 2,426 artists from 82 countries and territories. The Golden Pinwheel is not merely a standalone competition—it is a comprehensive programme which includes exhibitions, an illustrated yearbook and a variety of promotional campaigns.2023 Golden Pinwheel Regulations

The Golden Pinwheel Competition Opens Up New Opportunities

Since 2023, the organising committee will launch a new category—Commercial, in addition to the original submission category—Book Publishing, so as to encourage illustrators to demonstrate their commercial value through diversified forms of artistic expression, and to promote communication and cooperation with illustrators and brands, advertisers.

In order to give recognition to the most talented artists in the competition, the 2023 Golden Pinwheel is offering a wide array of awards: the Golden Pinwheel Grand Award (rewarding the two most outstanding artworks for each category—one from China and one from overseas), the Golden Pinwheel Special Mentions and the People’s Choice Award for both categories. In addition to the above award, the Golden Pinwheel Young Illustrators Competition organising committee goes on the “award-to-award” cooperation with the Astra International Picture Book Writing Contest to offer the Golden Pinwheel Young Illustrators Competition Astra Award. This joint award aims to promote international collaboration and publication among picture book illustrators and writers. The award is open to all 50 finalists from Book Publishing Category of the Golden Pinwheel Competition and judged by an independent jury appointed by the sponsors of the Astra International Picture Book Writing Contest.

Beyond that, one of the Book Publishing Category award-winners will be chosen by the CCBF Organising Committee to design the key visual of the 2024 edition of the book fair. This new image will be an integral part of the fair’s visual communication for a whole year, including its use on our website, social media, gifts, and in advertisement campaigns.

All 100 finalists (50 from Book Publishing Category and 50 from Commercial Category) will be featured in 2023 CCBF Golden Pinwheel Young Illustrators Competition Yearbook, which will also be presented at the 2023 Golden Pinwheel Illustration Exhibition held at the book fair from 17 to 19 November at Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Centre (SWEECC).

Faithful to its core objective, the Golden Pinwheel Competition has shaped its prizes and distinctions on providing unique and distinctive opportunities to its participants. As an example, the winner of the Golden Pinwheel Grand Award (China) in Book Publishing Category will be invited to attend the 2024 edition of the Bologna International Children’s Book Fair (BCBF), and the winner of the Golden Pinwheel Grand Award (International) in Book Publishing Category will receive an invitation to the 2024 China Shanghai International Children’s Book Fair (CCBF). Both invitations include a flight ticket and full accommodation, covered by the event organiser. The winner of the Golden Pinwheel Grand Award (China &International) in Commercial Category will receive bonus reward of CNY 10,000 (tax included) provided by competition committee. The invited artists will have the opportunity to participate as guests in various illustration-related activities taking place at the fair.

The Golden Pinwheel Competition Welcomes New Partner

This year, the Golden Pinwheel Illustration Competition started a cooperation with the well-known Chinese children’s clothing brand M.latin and all finalist illustrators have the opportunity to sign a contract with M.latin children’s clothing brand. Founded in 2004 and based in Hangzhou, China, M.latin children’s wear has always focused on the original designs of high-end children’s clothing. • Eco State Poster Competitions 2023

    THEME

Montenegro was the first country in the world proclaimed as an ecological country in 1991, in Žabljak in the Durmitor National Park – exactly where the Wild Beauty Art Festival is taking place, showcasing high quality art programs in place of (still) astonishing natural beauty. Although a noble idea for a small country and its citizens, the reality, 31 years after, is quite different.
What does an “ecological country” mean for you and how to fight for such a great idea against corrupted political structures? How can a country be greener and more careful about its natural environment and how to force those in power to fulfil the green agenda?

    ENTRANT CRITERIA

“Ecologycal Country” is a new themed competition that is a part of the Wild Beauty Art festival 2023. It is open to all graphic designers interested in the discipline of poster art.

  • Imagine 2200 climate fiction short story contest | 2023/2024 – Free

    Imagine 2200: Write the future

Submissions are now open for the 2023/2024 Imagine 2200 climate fiction short story contest, celebrating the futures we want to see.

    PublishedMar 14, 2023

    TopicClimate + Climate Fiction

Grist is excited to announce our third-annual climate fiction short story contest, Imagine 2200: Climate Fiction for Future Ancestors.

Imagine 2200 is an invitation to writers from all over the globe to imagine a future in which solutions to the climate crisis flourish and help bring about radical improvements to our world. We dare you to dream anew. [Get Imagine updates: Sign up for our email list]

Submissions for our 2023/2024 contest are now open. We’re looking for stories of 3,000 to 5,000 words that envision the next 180 years of climate progress — roughly seven generations – imagining intersectional worlds of abundance, adaptation, reform, and hope.

    Submit your story now

A great Imagine story showcases creative climate solutions, particularly through narratives that center the communities most impacted by the climate crisis, and that envision what a truly green, equitable, and decolonized society could look like. We celebrate fiction rooted in hope, justice, and cultural authenticity, and aim to amplify voices that have been, and continue to be, affected by systems of oppression.

There is no cost to enter. Submissions close June 13, 2023, 11:59 p.m. U.S. Pacific Time.

The winning writer will be awarded $3,000, with the second- and third-place winners receiving $2,000 and $1,000, respectively. An additional nine finalists will each receive $300. All winners and finalists will have their story published in an immersive collection on Grist’s website.

Stories will be judged by a panel of literary experts, including acclaimed authors Paolo Bacigalupi, Nalo Hopkinson, and Sam J. Miller.

    * * *

Imagine 2200 was inspired and informed by literary movements like Afrofuturism and Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, disabled, queer, and feminist  futurisms, along with hopepunk and solarpunk. We hope writers of all genres look to these movements for inspiration, and we urge writers within these communities to submit stories.

We also invite you to bring climate fiction and the principles of Imagine 2200 into other genres. Write a climate mystery or comedy. If you love steamy romance, thread a climate story through that titillating enemies-to-lovers arc. Climate connects to every part of life — all sorts of stories can be climate stories.

So dream big — envision a world where we prioritize our well-being, work to mend our communities, and lead lives that celebrate our humanity. We can’t wait to read what you come up with.

    Submit your story now

    Frequently Asked Questions

Below, we’ve answered some FAQs to explain the concepts that drive this project. If you’re ready to start writing, you can find our submissions portal here.

And if you’d like to get in touch or have additional questions, you can reach us at imaginefiction [at] grist.org.

    Writing your story

    Q. Can I submit a story longer than 5,000 words?

    A. We’re excited that you’re excited, but the submission guidelines are not flexible. Stories need to be between 3,000 and 5,000 words.

    Q. Does my story need to be set in the year 2200?

    A. Nope! We’d be just as happy to see your visions of amazing, just, and decolonized worlds in 2136 or 2098. We just want to encourage writers to think well beyond our present moment and with a sense of expansive possibility.

    Q. Can my story include supernatural or fantastical elements?

    A. Sure! Of course, like everything in your story, it should serve a purpose. We’re open to magical realism, spiritual elements, and supernatural twists, especially where they’re culturally significant.

    Q. TBH, I’m not that hopeful about the future of the planet. Can my story be grimdark and apocalyptic?

    A. We get it. The world can seem pretty dark these days. That’s why it’s so important to make space for visions of a future worth fighting for. We firmly believe in the power of imagination to help set our compass toward a better world. We’re not saying you need to feign optimism, but bear in mind that hope is one of the core elements we’ll be reading for. And hope takes many forms. We know that achieving a clean, green, and just future will require the sustained efforts of many people, some conflict, and a whole lot of adaptation. We invite you to show those aspects in your story as well.

    * * *

    Submitting your story

    Q. Is there a cost to enter the contest?

    A. Zero dollars!

    Q. Who can submit? Are there any restrictions on age, geography, etc.?

    A. Writers must be at least 18 years old to submit to Imagine 2200. The contest is open to folks anywhere in the world, except where participation is prohibited or restricted by applicable law. Stories do need to be written in English.

    Q. Can a submission have more than one author?

    A. We do accept co-authored stories. Only one of the co-authors should submit the story — the submission form will offer a way to list the other co-author(s). If we select a co-authored story for publication, all authors will be credited and prize money will be divided between them.

    Q. Do authors keep the rights to their stories?

    A. Yes, authors maintain the copyright and ownership of their stories.

Grist will have the right to publish and distribute your story on our site and with partners if you are a winner or finalist.

We use those rights to publish a digital collection of the winning and finalist stories, including audio versions of each story, and distribute some stories and audio with partner sites and publications. You are welcome to republish or sell your story elsewhere once the collection is published – we simply ask for a credit line indicating that the work first appeared in Grist’s Imagine 2200 collection.

We also ask for 12 months of exclusive print anthology rights to publish winning and finalist stories in a print version of the collection (like our Afterglow anthology). If we do publish such an anthology, all authors receive a share of the advance and any royalties.

If you are not a winner or finalist, we retain no rights to your story after you are notified.

See all the information about rights and licensing in our full official rules.

[NOTE: This answer has been updated to better clarify how we use winning and finalist stories.]

    Q. OK, I’m in! How do I submit a story, and how can I help spread the word?

    A. Woo-hoo! For more complete guidelines and criteria, head to our submissions portal here. If you’d like to help get the word out or have a question we haven’t answered, drop us a note at imaginefiction [at] grist.org. We can’t wait to read your story!

    * * *

    Q. How can I learn more about Imagine and cli-fi at Grist?

    A. Check out our About page for more information and to see past contest winners and collections. Or sign up for our email list to get updates on Imagine contests and publications.
